Clinical Case Report of Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury : With Acupuncture Electrical Stimulation(AES)

Abstract
Objectives: A patient with spinal cord injury(SCI) is poor at prognosis. He may suffer quadriplegia, sensory paralysis or be dead. This report is a case that a patient who gets an operation for reductions and unites of cervical vertebra between 6 and 7 with SCI, gains a recovery under the treatment of rehabilitation of Oriental medicine and supplementary Acupuncture Electrical Stimulation(AES).

Methods: A patient was treated with Acupuncture therapy, Acupuncture electrical stimulation(AES), Herbal medication, Depletion and cupping therapy and Oriental physical therapy. To evaluate the pain of extremity, improvement of muscle strength and ability of usual behavior, Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), Modified Barthel Index(MBI) and Manual Muscle Testing(MMT) are used.

Results: Frankel Scale was changed from C7C to C7D, MBI was increased from 15 point to 75point. and MMT was improved from grade 2>3 to grade 3>4 on upper limb and from grade 3 to grade 4>5. VAS about a pain of extremity was decreased from 10 to 3. At a time of discharge from hospital, He could walk for himself within 100m with cane but the functional disability of both hands and feet, and sensory disorder of both legs was remained.

Conclusions: In this case, a patient was treated by general oriental medicine and supplementary AES on the view of flaccid paralysis of limb(Wi syndrome) and he got a wide improvement of general function.
